8 reasons why we should memorize the Quran
Allah (SWT) says: “Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish” (35:29)
Reciting the Quran the book of Allah is mentioned alongside establishing Prayer and spending in the way of Allah. This shows us that Reciting Quran is among the best of righteous deeds.
Abu Musa Al-Ashari (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,
“The believer who recites the Quran is like a citron whose fragrance is sweet and whose taste is delicious. A believer who does not recite the Quran is like a date fruit that has no fragrance but has a sweet taste. The hypocrite who recites the Quran is like basil whose fragrance is so sweet, but its taste is bitter. The hypocrite who does not recite the Quran is like a colocynth which has no fragrance and its taste is bitter.”
It was related by Muslim (also by Ibn Majah)
according to this Hadith, the part of showing glory to Allah is to show respect to the people of the Quran.
1- Allah (SWT) promises the highest level of Jannah for the one who memorizes the Quran.
Why Should I memorize the Quran?
Ibn Amr reported Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) as saying,
“The one who was devoted to the Qur’ān will be told to recite, ascend and recite carefully as he recited carefully when he was in the world, for he will reach his abode when he comes to the last verse he recites.”
Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud and Nasai transmitted it.
Islamic scholars have explained this Hadith that the number of levels in paradise is equal to the number of ayahs or verses in the Quran. The Mumin (Believer) will rise one rank for each ayah he\she memorizes.
The reward of Allah (SWT) is for whoever memorizes the Quran and acts upon it. Whoever memorizes the Quran, will rise in status in paradise to a level equal to what he memorized from the Quran.
2- The honor for the parents of the memorizer of the Quran.
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“The one who memorized the Qur’an shall come on the Day of Judgement and (the reward for reciting the Qur’an) says: ‘O Lord! Decorate him.” So he is donned with a crown of nobility. Then it says: “O Lord! Give him more!’ So he is donned with a suit of nobility. Then it says: “O Lord! Be pleased with him.’ So He is pleased with him and says: “Recite and rise up, and be increased in reward with every Ayah.”
Jami at-Tirmidhi
Not only the Hafiz (Memorizer) receive rewards, but it will be the highest honor for his parents and reward for parents of Hafiz will wear a crown of honor. We try our best to make our parents proud in this world, think of how proud they would be in the hereafter!
“If anyone recites the Qur’an and acts according to its content, on the Day of Judgement his parents will be given to wear a crown whose light is better than the light of the sun in the dwellings of this world if it were among you. So what do you think of him who acts according to this ?”
Da’if (Al-Albani)
3- The best person is one who learns the Quran and teaches it.
Uthman bin Affan (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,
“The best amongst you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.”
[Al-Bukhari].
4- Allah Gives 10 rewards for each letter that the memorizer of the Quran reads or more.
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,
“Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.”
[At- Tirmidhi]
So, for every letter of the Quran, the memorizer receives ten rewards or more. The Quran has 6666 verses, and every verse has so many alphabets. Surely, he will gain millions of rewards by completing reading the Quran. Of course, The rewards of Allah (SWT) are beyond mathematical calculations and of course, it is beyond our limited comprehension.
5- The Quran will intercede for the memorizer of the Quran in the hereafter
Abu Umamh (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
I heard the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) saying,
“Read the Qur’an, for it will come as an intercessor for its reciters on the Day of Resurrection.”
[Muslim]
The day of judgment is a day we will be in dire need of intercession. The Quran will intercede for the memorizer of the Quran as the Hadith mentioned.
6- Jannah for the memorizer of the Quran!
Ali (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Anyone who knows the Quran by heart and follows the lawful and the prohibited according to it, will be sent to Heaven by Allah (SWT).”
As long as the memorizer of the Quran follows the Halal (Lawful), and is kept away from the Haram (Prohibited), he will be granted Paradise!
7- The memorizer of the Quran will be saved from the fire of hell.
The prophet (PBUH) said: “If the Quran is enclosed by skin (If a person memorizes the entire Quran), then Allah will never burn it in the hell fire.”
8- Double rewards for those who find memorizing the Quran hard
Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said,
“The one who is proficient in the recitation of the Qur’an will be with the honorable and obedient scribes (angels) and he who recites the Qur’an and finds it difficult to recite, doing his best to recite it in the best way possible, will have two rewards.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]
We must never give up Hifz the Quran! even when we struggle with memorizing.
