It is the Day when people will be like moths, dispersed,

And the mountains will be like wool, fluffed up.

(i.e., beginning to disintegrate).

Then as for one whose scales are heavy [with good deeds],

He will be in a pleasant life.

But as for one whose scales are light,

His refuge ^[*] will be an abyss. (i.e., the pit of Hellfire).

[*]- Literally, “mother” (a man’s original refuge), which will envelop him as in an embrace.

And what can make you know what that is?

It is a Fire, intensely hot.

It is a noun that describes the Day of Judgment.

Its origin comes from the Arabic verb ‘Qara’a’ which means the act of two things hitting each other violently causing disturbing noise as hearing it.

This verb can be used in the exemplary image of ‘Qara’a al baab’ (i.e. to knock on a door) in the middle of the night. So the house owners will wake up terrified because they do not know who or what is there at the door at that unexpected time.

The same image can be applied on Judgment Day it will come to wake people up. They don’t know or even expect what will come; causing their hearts to be banged because of the terror of Its Events.

Then Allah SWT speaks the first question that comes to your mind when hearing this strange word.

Then comes another question which means that you cannot answer or get this question yourself unless Allah answers it first because no one can imagine the horrific events of this Day.

So Allah SWT said that to direct our curiosity of answering this question towards Him.

Allah SWT describes the state of people on Judgment Day; they will be like ‘moths’ going around in different directions. It is like when you try to switch the light on some bugs try to hit it in different directions. That is how all humanity will be.

And the tough mountains will be slammed together and they will be broken into little fragments until they turn to weightless wool with different colors. That will happen to the tough mountains which are the firmest thing we see on the earth, so what will happen to weak people like us?

On that Day, the great and heavy things won’t be weighed (like the great mountains).

The scales on that day will not weigh the heaviness of the people but the goodness of their deeds and intentions will.

‘Scales’ came as plural because only the good deeds will be weighed. It is not one scale that will weigh the good deeds on one scale and the bad deeds on the other, but it is one scale that will weigh the good deeds only if the faith of Allah exists in one’s heart. And if not, they will have nothing. Allah SWT says,

“Then We will turn to whatever ˹good˺ deeds they did, reducing them to scattered dust.”

Surah Al-Furqan

This means that the bad deeds will not even be put on the scale, because what has weight will be weighed which the bad deeds do not have.

That successful one, whose scales will be heavy, will have a pleasant life.

This verse did not describe that he will be pleasant in Paradise, but his life will be pleasant, which means that he will be always satisfied and pleased living a life of no worries.

And this is why the word ‘eesha’ is beautifully used here as it is usually used to describe animals in jungles because they don’t lack food or shelter or even strive to get them but everything will be easy to get and more beautiful than worldly pleasure.

And the one whose scales will be light; his home will be Hell. Allah SWT used the word ‘mother’ as it will hold him tightly not letting him escape as this will be his lasting forever home.

And the word ‘hawiyah’ come from the verb ‘hawa’ which does not mean to just ‘fall’ in the deep canyon of Hell, but it means diving deep into this canyon.

The final (Haa’) of the word ‘hiyyah’ came to show and confirms the strength and danger of Hell in order to scare the audience of it.
